Competences possessed and required by European graduates. REFLEX Report to HEFCE No 4
The report is based on the results of a major international study of graduate employment some five years after graduation. It presents an analysis of graduates' perceptions of what competences they need to do their current jobs and whether they possess these competences
The negative impact of preschool teachers' traditional gender role attitudes on boys' reading related motivation and skills
According to gender stereotypes, reading is for girls. In this study, we
investigated the role of preschool teachers in transmitting such gendered
expectations. We suggest that boys are less motivated to read in preschool,
and less competent in reading 1 year later in primary school, if their
preschool teacher holds a traditional gender role attitude than if the teacher
has egalitarian beliefs. In 135 independent dyads of a female preschool
teacher (N = 135) and one boy (n = 65) or one girl (n = 70) we measured
teacher's gender role attitude, child's reading related motivation as well as
precursors of reading skills in preschool, and child's reading skills at the
end of first grade in primary school. As expected, the more traditional
preschool teachers' gender role attitude was, the weaker was boys' motivation
to (learn to) read while girls' motivation was unrelated to teachers' gender
role attitude. In either gender, motivation in preschool predicted reading
skills at the end of first grade
sehr geringem Umfang in ihren Ausschreibungsprozessen integrieren.
Type I interferons protect neonates from acute inflammation through interleukin 10âproducing B cells
Newborns and infants are highly susceptible to viral and bacterial infections, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. We show that neonatal B cells effectively control the production of proinflammatory cytokines by both neonatal plasmacytoid and conventional dendritic cells, in an interleukin (IL) 10âdependent manner, after Toll-like receptor (TLR) 9 triggering. This antiinflammatory property of neonatal B cells may extend to other TLR agonists (Pam3CSK4, lipopolysaccharide, and R848) and viruses. In the absence of B cells or of CD5+ B cell subsets, neonatal mice developed stronger inflammatory responses and became lethally susceptible to CpG challenge after galactosamine sensitization, whereas wild-type (WT) mice were resistant. Paradoxically, interferon (IFN)-α/ÎČ enhanced the inflammatory response to CpG challenge in adult mice, whereas they helped to control neonatal acute inflammation by stimulating the secretion of IL-10 by neonatal B cells. Finally, WT neonatal B cells rescued IL-10â/â neonates from a lethal CpG challenge, whereas IFN-α/ÎČ receptorâdeficient B cells did not. Our results show that type I IFNs support a negative regulatory role of neonatal B cells on TLR-mediated inflammation, with important implications for neonatal inflammation and infection
Exploring eco-industrial development in the global south: recognizing informal waste-picking as urban-industrial symbiosis?
Industrial ecology (IE) is discussed as a suitable approach to resolve three widespread socio-ecological problems in the so-called global south: waste accumulation, unemployment, and lack of adequate housing. As the IE framework was developed mainly in the global north, its applicability in the global south is uncertain. The issue is discussed along the use of municipal waste as building materials as a concrete application of circular economy (CE) and IE principles, which could contribute to the alleviation of the aforementioned social-ecological problems. The study focuses on San Martin, a district in the Buenos Aires metropolitan areawhich suffers from these problems dispite its industrial capacities. A SWOT analysis that includes all PESTLE dimensions was applied to identify risks for the success of an IE-based strategy, including the main actors and stakeholders of local waste management. Key issues include the informality and low agency of non-profit organizations, fluctuations in the national economy, inefficiencies in waste collection and recovery, and a lack of awareness and policies on waste separation. One major challenge is the undervaluation of the relevance, expertise and efficiency of waste sorting and processing by informal waste pickers and non-profit organizations. These practices should be recognized as a symbiosis of the urban with the industrial metabolism. This way, the epistemic basis for the eco-industrial development (EID) framework can be layed to make it capable to empower them rather than further displace the people involved. In this way, urban EID could become a useful strategy to channel different scientific disciplines, knowledge and actors, knowledge and actors towards sustainable development.Fil: Tröger, Danny. How are applicants for study places in higher education selected in Germany? A systematic overview of current admission practices by subject area and higher education institutions of different sponsorship
(DIPF/Orig.)The allocation of study places in higher education in Germany is subject to profound changes. In a systematic overview, we describe all currently used admission procedures at German higher education institutions, split by subject area and sponsorship of the higher education institution. We drew a random, stratified sample of 1,000 study programs. Results show, among other things, that within STEM, the allocation of study places is particularly often based exclusively on the average grade in the school leaving certificate (Abitur), and this more frequently than in economic sciences and law or the social sciences. In economic sciences and law, applicants are particularly often selected via admission procedures developed by the respective higher education institution itself. Combinations of different criteria are used most frequently at private universities in health sciences. Applicants without university entrance qualification have access to a considerable proportion of study programs. Results are discussed against the background of the increasing heterogeneity of applicants for university study places in terms of equal opportunities and fairness. (DIPF/Orig.

Contributions to climate action : 14 years of adaptation research at IDRC
This report presents key contributions of IDRC to climate action over the past 14 years, highlighting implications for future programming and for the research community at large. IDRCâs support for research on climate change adaptation has increasingly focused on three major themes: 1) Influencing policy and practice 2) Ensuring impact at scale, and 3) Integrating gender and social equity considerations. The report recognizes four key lessons: the importance of direct research investment in the Global South; the need to move beyond seeing gender as a vulnerability; the value in recognizing multiple dimensions of social inequity; and the critical need for capacity building to develop climate leaders
